Because hiring the wrong person, particularly in an executive role, is more expensive than not hiring at all. And if you find the right person, chances are higher they will stay longer. Here are five pitfalls I saw during my tenure in recruiting and coaching that you can learn from to keep everyone happy from operations, to sales, to finance. It all comes down to being clear in what you want so you can hire who you want.

Steve Jobs suggested everyone (including him) earns half of their worth simply by showing up for a scheduled event. Where do your thoughts go when you schedule a meeting, then reschedule, then reschedule once again and the rescheduling is always necessary because of the same person? Perhaps this kind of incident makes you reevaluate your own history of showing up. And, how do you hold someone accountable these days?

That purpose has you making things happen. Answering questions, problem solving, strategizing, researching, analyzing, bringing people together. In this process of doing, do you give yourself a chance to ask yourself, who are you being? And, who do you want to be? Productive is nothing without a clear purpose.

During times of less bustle and more deep thinking, come many creative ideas. How can you look at something in a novel way? You don’t have to be a scientist, artist or inventor. Simply encourage your natural curiosity when solving a dilemma. How can you envision something in a new light? Can you learn from Berry Gordy's leadership and creativity as a visionary? Can he spur something in you, like he did in me: to look at and examine his thought process, his why for inclusion, and his deep calling to see people’s potential as his way to give and succeed. You can be a visionary and a leader. It’s all up to you. You can take his lessons and interpret them for you and your team. Or your creativity can be motivated by his. How are you going to take that next step?

However, that doesn’t mean we are always effective in our communication. Times when our communication can be seen as “speaking in riddles” could include purposefully murky or innocently confusing. How to avoid misunderstandings.

Jackson’s character, is there to lead the disparate group of super-specially-talented independent people. He’s the inspiration that drives them and the glue that keeps them together despite the strong personalities and desires to be individual achievers and heroes. Do you have a team of Avengers or only a bunch of super-talented individuals? Read and find out.
